18 - CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, January 3 - January 9, 1997 Olympics Continued from page 16 be a fundraiser, and I have several more ideas for fundraisers." King said attending regional and national conferences has giv- en him more and more ideas of raising inoney and awareness for Special Olympics. His enthusiasm has carried over to some of the SCI administrators who will attend a regional confer- ence in Atlantic City this winter. "I want more understanding a/ad participation from our administra- tors, and I'll have it after this con- ference," he said. "We will be hearing an extremely motivational speaker. This is a woman who will not leave a dry eye in the house; what she has overcome is incredi- ble." King gives credit to the other officers who gave personal time before Christmas to accompany Santa to the bowling lanes. He said those who come to know the program usually do end up gladly giving of themselves to work with the inspiring Special Olympic ath- letes. "I went to my first games last year," he said. "The look on the faces of these kids when someone puts a medal around their neck...It's priceless. And, I saw the face of one officer When an athlete turned around and put his medal around the officer's neck. It touches your heart." He said volunteers are always needed for the program, to help out with evefits and to raise awareness and money for the pro- gram. Volunteer orntation ses- sions are conducted monthly, and those who are interested in the program may call the Special Olympics office, 855-0546. CLOSEOUT PRICE! CLOSEOUT PRICE!
