20 - CAPE GAZETYE, Friday, January 3 - January 9, 1997 Jen EIIingsworth photo Dewey Lions award Melvin Jones Award Alice Walsh (center) was the recipient of a Melvin Jones Fellowship award at the Dewey Beach Lions Club meeting on Thursday, Dec. 19. Walsh received the award in memory of her late husband, James Walsh, who was a 28-year member of the club. All of the couple's eight children were present at the meeting, where she was presented the honor by Sen. Special guests to the State Grange Session were National Master Kermit Richardson and his wife Margaret. Richardson was a speaker dur- ing the session and banquet and his wife served as Mistress of Cer- emonies. At the banquet, recognition was MILLMAN given to the "Delaware State Grange Farm Family," and the "Delaware Granger of the Year." Chosen as the 1996 recipients for the Delaware State Grange F'm Family was the Warner En- terprises, Inc., of Mil- ford. Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Warner own 30 acres and rent 125 acres, growing various crops including field corn, soybeans and different vegetables. They also ".raise 110,000 capacity of roasters, with 4.2 flocks per year. They began their farm in 1977, and are joined by son Stacey and daughter Janelle during their free time. The Warners hold an annual strawber- ry festival each year during the season. During the festival, now going into its fourth year, the public is invited for free shortcake and ice cream, and the local 4-H group and FFA organization provide a bake sale and barnyard. Other ser- vice groups offer refreshments and free hay rides. The family was honored with a plaque and a sign bearing the Grange emblem for outdoor dis- play. The Delaware Granger of the Year award was presented to Shirley Millman, of Lewes, a 32 year member of Henlopen Grange No. 20. Millman was recognized for her work with the Grange and her community. She has held many offices in her local Grange and is very involved with the Eastern Star, United Methodist Women and the Gideons. She was given a framed certificate and a personal gift by State Grange Master Mervin Richard.
