Lewes Library offers series on Innocence and Experience The Lewes Public Library will host "Innocence & Experience: Movement toward Maturity" a book discussion group on alter- nate Wednesdays at 2 p.m., begin- ning Jan. 8. Richard Keenan of the Univer- sity of Maryland will speak on William Blake's "Songs of Inno- cence and Songs of Experience." Blake's poems are "split- screen" images of "contrary states of the human soul," creating a complementary tension, an inter- nal dialogue. Like the paired "The Lamb" and "The Tyger" many poems in "In- nocence" have counterparts in "Experience." The other works to be discussed are: Jan. 22 - "The Damnation of Theron Ware" by Harold Frederic. Theron Ware is an arrogant and self-deceiving young minister who hopes to inspire changes in his straightlaced congregation. In- stead, he faces corruption and dis- enchantment. He survives to comment, "Here is the kind of joke God plays." Edith Mroz, an independent schol- ar, will speak about the novel. Feb. 5 - "Their Eyes Were Watching God" by Zora Neale Hurston. Janie Crawford's first two forced marriages caused servitude of body and soul but in her third she experiences freedom and delight. Her husband Tea Cake reflects on her rebirth, "God...saved up yo' young girl days to spend wid me." Susanne Fox of Wesley College will lead the discussion. Feb. 19 - "All the Pretty Hors- es" by Cormac McCarthy. In this modern western, 16-year-old John Grady Cole leaves Texas after'his grandfather's death to seek adven- ture in Mexico. Here he experiences lessons on survival,,loyalty, death and love. The discussion will be facilitated by Michael Waters, of Salisbury State University. March 5 - "Billy Budd" by Her- man Melville. Billy Budd is a young sailor who exemplifies goodness but en- counters evil personified in his one enemy. Through a "jugglery of circum- stances" Billy becomes a murder- er. But his execution raises his in- nocence to a higher power. Tony Whall of Salisbury State University will speak on the work. 00Lamp Post Best Reputation "[ at the Beach!
