Relay for Life is a celebration of life dedicated to current and former cancer patients and fami- lies and friends. The team relay event, May 6-7, increases aware- ness about cancer in the local community and also raises funds for research to fight the battle. Last year's East Sussex Relay for Life raised more than $146,000 and received recogni- tion at the American Cancer Soci- ety South Atlantic Division's an- nual meeting. He said his training as an osteopath is the same as that of a medical doctor but with addi- tional training in other areas. "We essentially perform the same medicine and surgery, the same diagnostics and tests, except that in our medical school train- ing, osteopaths have more train- ing in manipulative - soft tissue - therapy. M.D.s don't get that," Carroll said. As an osteopath, Carroll said he's also required to take an addi- tional year of training in a variety of medical-care areas. "Some would say that an osteo- pathic student is a little better rounded in other specialty areas," he said. Carroll has moved to the Cape Region after working at an ortho- pedic practice in Largo, Fla. He said he made the move to be clos- er to his Pennsylvania roots and for better career opportunities. "I needed to be in an area where there's a need for my specialty and a population that I could serve," he said. Outside of his medical practice, Carroll said he enjoys waterfowl hunting, spending time with his wife, Theresa, children Kelly, Charles and Snyder and his hunt- ing dog, Riley.
