Working with the National Park Service, the crew wielded Pulaskis and McCleods to shore-up mountain trails, improve drainage and prune vegetation. Group leader James Moody stated, "them trails need fixin' and we're fixin' to fix 'em!" The group of 14 stayed at the Wallace Pratt Geologic Research Center, named after the former resident, a wealthy geologist who later donated the property to the National Park Service. Far back in the Permian era, some 265 million years ago, this area was covered by aninland sea. Today, geologists come from all over the world to explore one of the best examples of an ancient fossilized marine reef. The exposed reef is now an imposing mountain range with the tallest peaks in Texas towering above the desert with over 80 miles of trails meandering through can- yons, conifers and highlands.
