St. Mark's Episcopal Church reopens cemetery Older churches often have cemeteries, and St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Millsboro is no exception. The 160-year old sanctuary has a small cemetery holding the remains Qf many parishioners. Many of their tombstones are a testament to their faith, and almost all have the expected dates of birth and death, but none are recent. Despite there being sever- al potential gravesites, there had been no recent burials for over a generation, and the vestry- the church's governing board - decid- ed three years ago to explore reopening the cemetery. The primary reason to reopen the cemetery was to offer a min- istry. While one could easily argue that it makes no difference at the Resurrection where one is buried (or even if one is buried at all), it is at the same time very comforting, to many Christians, especially those in the Episcopal tradition, to know that they and their loved ones are in the hal- lowed ground of the church they attended, Thus, with the goal of offering comfort, the vestry formed mittee to see if, after 30 years, reopening the cemetery was feasi- ble. First, it was necessary to deter- mine how many potential gravesites there were, and the cemetery committee had the help of Richard and Rich Watson of Watson Funeral Home in deciding that there were enough sites to make reopening the cemetery economically feasible. Moreover, with their expertise they were able to answer the many questions that arose throughout the process. Two committee members, Dan LeCates and David Potter, over- saw the commissioning of a sur- vey of the churchyard, which allowed them to locate precisely where the new graves could be placed. Gordon Ldwis and Randall Cash worked on preparing the paperwork to make the sites avail- able to the parishioners. Tempe Steen, a local attorney and an Episcopalian herself, reviewed the paperwork to make sure that everything was in order. Rev. David Archibald, St. Mark's rec- tor, and Roberta Collins, its Memorial Committee chair, rounded out the cemetery com- mittee and, of course, will play a crucial role in putting the paper- work into practice. Anyone interested in burial at St Mark's should contact Randall Cash. Moreover, anyone who might have made arrangements for burial there before it was closed should contact him imme- diately. His number is 236-7559. CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, January 5 - Monday, January 8, 2007 - 73 Submitted photo IEHA5 Members of St. Mark's Cemetery Committee include (l-r) Rev.
