DeVries BPW was chartered
jointly with Rehoboth Club on
Jan. 24, 1949 at the Angler's
Restaurant, as a part of the
Delaware Federation of Business
and Professional Women's Clubs.
The charter president was Hazel
Brittingham, and the name "De-
Vries" was suggested by Gladys
R. Toms of Lewes, who was the
state president at the time. Brit-
tingham, an outstanding historian,
skilled navigator, DeVries was
given command of the expedition
that set sail in December; 1630.
The ship "Walvis" (Whale) was
captained by Peter Heyes, and
landed in the spring of 1631. As a
tribute to the lovely swans in the
region, the name of Zwaanendael
(Valley of the Swans) was chosen
for the site on a stream (now the
Lewes-Rehoboth Canal), named
Hoornkill, after DeVries' home in
Hoorn, Holland.
Past club presidents recognized

Chappell, June Sennebaum, Patri-
