26 - CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, January 17 - January 23, 1997 Smith among '97 Hall of Fame recipients The Delaware Commission for Women has announced the selec- tion of four honorees for the 1997 Hall of Fame of Delaware Women. Honorees were selected on the basis of their contributions, through paid or unpaid work, which have had a significant impact upon the lives of citizens on a local, state, national or in- ternational officers in New Castle County, Freebery created the department's rape prevention program, initiated the first sex crimes unit and formed the first domestic violence squad of detectives. Freebery's latest accomplishment is being New Castle County's first woman Chief of Police. Peterson is also a woman of many "firsts". She is the first woman elected president of New Castle County Council. Peterson is the first woman administrator of Labor Law Enforcement for the Delaware Department of Labor and the first woman appointed as SlVI/TH level. The honorees will be recognized at an induction ceremony and dinner to be held on March 19 in Dover. The honorees for 1997 are Mary Ann Shadd Cary (1923-1893), Sherry U Freebery, Karen Peter- son and Harriet N. Smith. Cary was the first African- American newspaper editor/pub- lisher on the northern continent, an abolitionist, a suffragette and the first African-American woman to vote in a federal elec- tion. One of the first female police director of the Division of Indus- trial Affairs, also in the Depart- ment of Labor. She authored Delaware's Child Labor Act, which is one of the strictest Child Labor Laws in the nation. She had the Worker's Compensation Act re-written to make it gender-neu- tral. Appointed by Gov. Thomas Carper as Director of State Per- sonnel in 1993, Smith is the first state cabinet member from Sussex County and was directly responsi- ble for the opening of the first Sussex County State Personnel Lewes 1997 directory to be distributed in May The Zwaanendael Women's Club is compiling the 1997-98 Lewes Telephone Directory which will be distributed in May. First Town Club to meet Jan. 21 The First Town Club of Lewes will hold a general meeting on Tues- day, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m. at the Lewes Presbyterian Church, Kings High- way, Lewes. A movie will be shown about the history of Lewes, made on the occasion of its 350th birthday. Spouses and guests are welcome.
