Obituaries Martha Tabor, visual artist Martha Tabor, 64, of Washing- ton, D.C. and Broadkill Beach, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, of cancer. Ms. Tabor was a sculptor, print- maker and documentary photog- rapher. Her sculptures are in the permanent collections of the Loudon Hospital Center, Wash- ington Theological Union, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Wesley Theological Semi- nary, Friends Meeting of Wash- ington, the Urban Institute of Washington, and the new Chil- dren's Inn at the National Institute of Health. Ms. Tabor was the re- cipient of grants from the Nation- al Endowment of the Arts and the DC Commission for the Arts. She was awarded artist residencies to the MacDowell Colony in New Hampshire, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Studios Midwest in Illinois and Blue Mountain Center in New York State. She worked as a freelance pho- tographer and visual artist from 1979 to 2003. She studied art at the Corcoran School of Art, the Women's Studio Workshop and Pyramid Atlantic. Her major bod- ies of work include a series of wood sculptures influenced by traditional gospel music, a series of screenprints called "My Dog as Art," and photography projects in midwifery and women in blue collar trades. She was a member of Washington Sculptors' Group and Impact Visuals, a photogra- phers' cooperative based in New York City. Ms. Tabor was also an active member of Friends Meeting of Washington, and her Quaker faith was a consistent source of solace and inspiration. She was born in Knoxville, Tenn., but lived most of her life in the Washington, D.C. area. She receive a bachelor of arts from Colby College in Maine in 1961, a master of arts in comparative lit- erature from the University of Maryland in 1967, and a second master's degree in photography from Goddard College in Ver- mont in 1980. She held a wide range of jobs. In the 1960s, she taught English composition and literature at Frederick Community College. In the 1970s, she worked heavy con- struction as a welder and was in- volved in the building of parts of the Metro system, the first woman welder to do such work. She was a Journeyman of Local 2311, the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, and later president of Local 2677, the American Federation of Govern- ment Employees. She worked as a program officer for a federal eco- nomic development grant pro- gram and was a union organizer for white and blue collar workers. In the late 1970s, she founded her freelance photography business, Working Images. Her documen- tary photography focused on so- cial and political issues - antiwar, civil rights, equal opportunity in employment - that were directly influenced by her early work ex- periences.
