FBI arrests sex offender m Rehoboth Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents arrested Claude Krannebiter, 37, at a hotel on Route 1 in Rehoboth Beach, Jan. 15. The FBI charged the motel clerk, a registered violent sex of- fender in Maryland, with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. He was then extradited to Maryland to face a bevy of other charges. Peter A. Gulotta, FBI special agent, said the FBI recently be- came involved in the case at the request of Howard County Police Department in Marylan d. Kran- nebiter apparently pleaded guilty to contributing to the delinquency of a minor while a public school teacher in Howard County. Guiot- ta said Krannebiter failed to ap- pear in court for his sentencing, and Howard County police had been looking for him for approxi- mately a year. "We believe he's been in Re- hoboth since June," said Gulotta. The agents transported Kran- nebiter to Delaware State Police Troop 4, where he waived extradi- tion. Sgt. Bryan Waser of Howard County Police Department said Krannebiter is a former middle school teacher who had a student in his vehicle when was stopped for a DUI. The student later told police Krannebiter paid him to perform sexual acts. Krannebiter was later convicted for DUI and contributing to the delinquency, of a minor. Waser said he failed to appear at Howard County Deten- tion Center, March 7, 2001, to serve a six-month sentence. "We were tracking him by several means," said Waser. At a certain point, however, the trail went cold. "He was on the run for al- most a year." The FBI became involved be- cause police were certain Kran- nebiter had left Maryland. Shortly after the FBI received an anony- mous tip about where Krannebiter worke d , agents appeared at the hotel fn plain clothes, said Waser, who said Krannebiter was work- ing at the front desk. "He asked if he could help them," said Waser, "and they said 'yes, Claude, you can.' He was quite surprised." Waser said Howard County's additional charges were violation of probation and failure to surren- def. Additionally, he said, Kran- nebiter is a registered violent sex offender with two open warrants in Baltimore County, Md., where he is wanted for violation of pro- bation and failure to appear on a driving-while-intoxicated charge, which in Maryland is a second- tier level of the drinking-and-driv- ing law. Delaware State Police are asking anyone with informa- tion to report on Krannebiter to call Troop 4 Sgt. Charles Brown, at Troop 4 - 856-5850, Ext. 218.
