cape Gazette BUSINESS & REAL ESTATE FR,DAY, JANUARY 22- MONDAY, JANUARY 25, 2010 33 Feaeral ARRA requirements trigger apr00liance rebate, program changes Some rebates end Sunday, 3an. 31 New requirements from the U.S. Department of Energy for use of federal American Recov- ery and Reinvestment Act fund- ing will trigger a shift toward Sustainable Energy Utility Ener- gize Delaware rebate programs that emphasize energy and water savings for clothes washers, dish- washers and hot-water heaters. Delaware was the first state in the nation to deploy an appliance rebate program using federal stimulus dollars. As a result of the new federal requirements, the Sustainable Energy Utility (SEU) will direct American Recovery and Rein- vestment Act (ARRA) dollars to- ward dishwashers, clothes wash- ers and gas hot-water heaters. Rebates for refrigerators, freezers and dehumidifiers will end Sunday, Jan. 31 - three weeks earlier than originally scheduled. Rebates for clothes washers will expire Sunday, Feb. 28. No pur- chases of these appliances made after these dates will be eligible for rebates. Air conditioner re- bates will continue but assessed based on demand and effective- ness. Advances in design and tech- nology allow Energy Star gas wa- ter heaters, clothes washers and dishwashers to generate greater quantities of savings in energy and water. Water heaters can re- coup a customer's investment in a short period of time. SEWs Energize Delaware has added other energy-saving op- p6rtunities. More than 4,000 re- bates have been sent to Delaware residents for purchasing energy- efficient appliances that lock in long-term savings on utility bills and improvements to the envi- ronment. The appliances that qualify for rebates are as follows: Dishwashers- Delawareans can get a $30 rebate for qualified en- ergy-efficient dishwashers. Dishwashers made before 1994 result in an average of $40 a year more on utility bills, compared to owning a new Energy Star-quali- fied model, which can also save about $85 more in energy costs over the unit's lifetime than a new standard modeL Qualified models use one-third less energy and water than conventional ma- chines and clean better. They al- so include performance im- provements, like soil sensors, im- proved water filtration, more ef- ficient jets and dish-rack designs. G=,s water heaters - Rebates for gas water heaters include $50 for a qualified high-efficiency stor- age water heater and $200 for a whole house on-demand tank- less or condensing water heater. The average household spends $400 to $600 per year on water heating, making it the largest en- ergy expense other than heating and cooling rooms. Today, Ener- gy Star-qualified models include enhancements for improved effi- ciency and performance, which could cut heating costs in half. Upgraded gas storage-water heaters can save about $360 over the product's life. Gas tankless water heaters use less energy and have a life expectancy of 20 years, far longer than conven- tional models. Gascondensing models - due out in mid-2010 - are designed for high perform- ance and can cut expenses by about 30 percent. washers - Delawareans can get up to $75 for purchasing qualified front- and top-load En- ergy Star model The savings on Energy Star front-load washers is the highest of all the typical household appliances, due to the energy savings of the unit and the hot-water heater, as well as the great reduction in water usage.
