84 FRIDAY, JANUARY 22- MONDAY, JANUARY 25, 2010 SPORTS & OUTDOORS cape oazette Read & react: Odds makers favor Colts, Saints to win By Dave Frederick I was "hooked up" with the Tennessee Titans at the 1999 Super Bowl in Atlanta, a family member guest of the team being the uncle of Mike Frederick who backed up rookie sensation Jevon Kearse at defensive end. Mike gave me $500 in cash and told me to enjoy the four days and to please spend the money, but I couldn't because every time I turned, tabs were picked up. I was quickly spoiled but when I returned to the parking lot at Philly International and started my iced-over Toyota Tacoma with bald tires I was the victim of a kamikaze pigeon attack. White guts splattered across my windshield. God had sent a message, 'qCCelcome home!" The wild card about playoff football is that the millionaires care and the speed of the game in- creases and not every player can keep pace or meet the moment. There is extra bonus money on the line; more goes to the winners with another guaranteed wind- fall in the next round. I asked my nephew if the money was a motivator and he said, "Def'mitely, yes. "It's like the guys on the other team are physicai- ly trying to steal your money." Pigskin pundits feed on a trough of meaningless statistics suited for a savant, talk about their picks and keys to the game, and if you step back you will hear the same garbage and realize that any person who seriously gambles on professional football has lost his mind because games go weird in unfore- seen ways. The lets at the colts - the first and last image coming into focus is Peyton Manning. He is an ath- letic quarterback savant. If he had to run a Tim Tebow offense he would be killed in the first four minutes. He can't tackle and can bareley run, but he is league MVP four times because he can exploit a defense like no one ever could and rarely gets flat- tened. And, I hate to say it, but he "sees white peo- ple" and delivers the ball to Dallas Clark and Austin Colley while Reggie Wayne has the best hands in the league. The Jets have an old-fashioned team based on defense and running the ball. They can definitely win this game but nationally they are considered to be boring. I will pick the Colts but I also chose the Chargers to win the Super Bowl The Vildngs in the Saints' Superdome is a game all about the American collective conscious and Hurricane Katrina. If you have no dog in this fight you have to hope New Orleans wins. I would go so far as to suggest if New Orleans does win they move the Super Bowl to the Superdome as a pay- back for what happened there when Fats Domino had to be airlifted from the parish and went to live with ]amarcus Russell who was dating his grand- daughter. This is a game featuring the Saints' Drew Brees, the six-foot quarterback who has always been told he is too short and slow, and the Vikings' Brett Favre who has always thought of Wrangler when he thought of value. Each team is way better at home. The Las Vegas odds makers don't like the lets and are giving away eight points at some casinos, and in spite of the Brett Favre and Adrian Peterson hype, New Orleans is favored by four with 53 as the over/under. The Super Bowl parties in Miami two weeks lat- er we couldn't crash with a front-end loader. Power parties of athletes and entertainers - somehow it all ends wrong!
