Steven Peck leads Striders to super Superbowl 5K f'mish By Tim Bamforth Seven talented kids, two confi- dent teachers, and a photographer sounds a bit like a takeoff of "Three Men & A Baby", but wrong-they're all associated with the Seashore Strider Youth Run- ning Club and traveled north last Saturday to join 301 other runners on Super Sunday. The Superbowl 5K was held at Bottlecaps Restaurant & Pub in the hills of downtown Wilming- ton. After the 8-11 year old kids fielded herds of questions from the Wilmington running regulars such as "Do you know how far this race is?", "How old are you?", "Do you think you'll fin= ish?" the Striders, in their purple & gold uniforms, showed the UlY- state regulars that the downstate kids from Lewes are for real. Led by cross country course record holder Steven Peck, the team came away from the hilly course with some super results and were presented with coupons for a free beer or soda at the post- race party. Yes, the children chose the soda! Peck, who overheard a "skinny, tall lady" at the start whisper to her friend that she would at least beat this little boy, made her swal- low her words as he turned in a good time of 22:40 for 90th place. Peck made sure to watch her fin- ish in 28:30. Brittany Morris, a second team All-American selection at Decem- ber's AAU National Champi- onships, finished 110th in a time of 23:27, while Taylor Donohue took 112th in a time of 23:28. Rt. 9. Mon-Sat 10-6. 684-4829 Fourth grader Tiffany Melendez finished 143rd in 24:35, while Christin Sexton ran one of her best races to take 153rd and turn in a time of 24:49. "At the start, lots of people were looking at us and wondering if we could do it, but we all knew that we could," said Melendez. "But at the finish they were all coming up and saying that we did good." Stephanie Peck, the youngest Strider to make the trip at 8 years, finished her first ever 5K race in a time of 30:10 for 237th place. Stephanie has been training with the Striders 2-3 days a week for the last month and if any of broth- er Steven's talent is passed down, she is sure to have a bright future ahead of her. Matt Riggin, nursing a sore an- kle, was 255th to round out the younger team of Striders. In the elementary education cat- egory, it was Patrice Riggin and Diane Donohue taking top honors with a time of 32:04. Donohue was paced by Riggin through her first ever 5K "how many hills are in this thing" race, and the sight of the finish line brought a snile to her face like her classroom chil- dren do every morning ..... Rumor has it that Donohue may keep up her intense training, get a summer racing series season un- der her belt, and possibly go after the lead role in the upcoming shooting of "Chariots of Fire II"... SPLITS...Dr. Lee Masser took second in the Superbowl 5K in the 55-59 category in 24:52, while Jim Lyons ran 22:59 to capture the 60 & over category. The race was won by Mike Melvin, who was a former competitor of mine from Lake Forest back in the early eighties...Cape Henlopen captured three events at last week's Salis- bury Invitational Indoor Track & Field Meet. For the boys, Frank Clement won the 500m run and teamed with Mark Marrin, Chris Kniepp, and Adam Butner to cap- ture the 1600m relay. Coach Gep- pert commented that Butner had a "great meet" on the night. On the girls' side, Jamie Hill led the way to win her first indoor hurdling race as she captured the 50m hur- dles in a time of 8.8 seconds. Hill, who hurdles tractors by hobby, follows a talented list of Cape fe- male hurdlers including Tonya Brown in the early eighties and Terri Hirneisen in the early nineties. Before this track nut leaves Cape, it's a good bet she will be mentioned on the same list...See ya Sunday at the plunge! Members of the Seashore Striders are shown at the post-race party after the Superbowl 5K. Shown in the back row, left to right, are Patrice Riggin, Brittany Morris, Diane Donohue, Christin Sexton, and Taylor Donohue. Shown in the front row, left to right, are Matt Riggin, Steven Peck, Tiffany Melendez and Stephanie Peck. The runners had a good day at the Su- perbow151{ placing well in a large field on a hilly course.
