CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, February 4 - February 10, 1994 - 37 Bests' Store halfway through changeover to Ace Hardware and Garde] Center By Dennis Forney Bests' Store at Five Points is about halfway through its changeover to Bests' Ace Hard- ware and Garden Center. Two months from now, new signs (inside and out) should be up, all shelves installed and stocked, floor tiles replaced, and promotions underway to complete the transition from grocery and hardware to pure hardware. Representatives from Ace, the national buying cooperative sup- plying and advising the Best fami- ly and their employees, have been in the store this week helping with the changeover. "This is a retrofit to make this an Ace store of the future," said Terry Wilson, a retail develop- ment manager for Ace. "Ace has 14 distribution centers across the country. This store is in the Balti- more region serving the mid- Atlantic states. We're currently doing about 30 to 40 of these retrofits a year in this region and 12-15 new stores." All Ace stores are independent- ly owned, according to Wilson. "Ace stores are convenience hardware stores," he said. "They're kind of like what conveL nience stores are to supermarkets. We don't want our customers tied up in long lines. We emphasize breadth of product and service - the hard core hardware line. We're here for the do-it-your- selfer who has limited time, needs to buy some items, and wants to get the job done." Randy Best, one of the owners of Bests' Ace Hardware and Gar- den Center, said he's pleased with the way hardware sales have held up during the changeover. "Peo- ple may not see as many cars here as they used to but many of those cars belonged to employees, We've dropped in employees from 50 to 20." Best said when the changeover is complete, customers will notice a well-organized, open store that's welHighted and well-signed. "There will be signs on all the aisles and signs on the walls around the store helping people find different items. Saleitems will be featured at the end of each aisle and new sales circulars will be distributed each month. It will be appealing to ladies as well as men. There are more and more single parent households and men and women both are, shopping hardware stores." Long-time customers will notice that Bests' Store appears larger inside now than it did before the changeover began.
