Home centers repre- senting products from the Clay- ton family of brands and serving the Lewes area now offer homes featuring the company's own ergy Saver Plus package as well as a number of Energy Star-certi- fied homes. Energy Saver Plus and Energy Star-cerfLfied homes are built to perform up to 30 percent more efficiently than comparable homes without the energy-sav- ing option. The homes feature high-performance windows that in maximizing operational effi- ciency, while minimizing envi- ronmental impact. According to a report titled, "The Costs and Financial Bene- fits of Green Buildings," devel- oped for the Sustainable Build- ing Task Force, the total financial benefits of green buildings are more than 10 times the average initial investment required to de- sign and construct a green build- ing. In addition, the homes include compact fluores- cent lighting (CFL), which re- quires 75 percent less energy, gives off 75 percent less heat and lasts up to 10 times longer than traditional light bulbs. In fact, the company has sold more than 8,800 Energy Star-certified homes since 2006, making it one of America's leading builders of energy-efficient homes. In addition to its core offering, the company also sells the i- house, a purpose-built green home with stylish design, cut- ting-edge color combinations and modern furnishings. The cost of utilities in an i-house, with the full complement of so- lar options, is as low as $1 per day. The i-house concept serves as the muse for new green home models. "We're learning as we go when it comes to building green. There are standards set in place for how environment-friendly a home can be, but there is no in- struction booklet on how to build the perfect green home," said Kevin Clayton, Clayton Homes president and CEO. "The practices we learn in build- ing these homes are continuous- ly being integrated into our core products." Clayton's headquarters has al- so been awarded LEED certifica- tion, established by the U.S. Green Building Council and ver- ified by the Green Building Cer- tification Institute.
