42 - CAPE GAZEqTI, Friday, February 21- February 27, 1997 Jen EIIingsworth photo Adele Powers sits outside the new location of her store, Heaven in a Handbasket. The new location is at 307 Re- hoboth Avenue Extended, in the blue house across from the Henlopen Junction Mall. Heaven in a Hand Basket ascends to new location By Jen Ellingsworth For owner Adele Powers, the new location of her Heaven in a Handbasket specialty gift store will be simply divine. The store, which has been situ- ated on Lake Avenue for the past four years, will re-loca "', 706 Rehoboth Avenue Extended this spring. Heaven in a Handbasket will make its new home in the blue house across from the Hen- lopen Junction Mall, the former site of an antique store. Powers will be joined by busi- ness partner Carol Smith, who is formerly of Dewey Beach and now lives in Middletown. Powers, who said she hopes to have a grand opening on Easter weekend, said that she anticipates the move because the new site not only affords more square footage for the store, but much more cus- tomer parking than the Lake Av- enue spot. The location is being leased to Adele Powers and her husband, Sussex Pines golf pro- fessional Jim Powers, by the Sus- sex Family YMCA. The YMCA recently acquired the property through a charitable remainder trust conveyed by the family of the late James S. Truitt. The Powers have been very ac- tive in the support of YMCA pro- grams, said Sussex Family YM- CA executive director Celia Givens. Most recently, the couple were sponsors of a YMCA golf tournament. "I'm very excited about having her here," she said. "I've had the opportunity to meet her and her husband, and I'm looking forward to the friendship and the business." Powers said she is also looking forward to working closely with the YMCA to serve the community. Plans for the new location include the addition of a tea room, she said, tables outside on the porch, and homemade cakes for sale with the already ex- isting balloon bouquets and bas- kets. For now, though she said she's concentrating on getting the store open for business. "I have lots of great ideas," said Powers. "We want to get the shop ready for the opening first. Down the road we'll offer the whole pack- age." The gift and balloon baskets, which Powers said have ranged in price from $12-$500, are a unique gift alternative for those in search of a different type of token. Offered for every occasion, the baskets can contain almost any- thing the customer desires. Heav- en in a Handbasket already carries many products which are often in- cluded in the baskets, but Powers said she can also use items provid- ed by the customers. Her cus- tomers will often include bottles of wine or champagne for use in their gift baskets, she said. Pow- ers is open for suggestions, and said the sky's the limit for what customers may choose to include. In addition, she said the store al- so offers delivery of its products. Powers said she's done work for wedding receptions in the past, and hopes to offer more of the same services at the new store. For information, call 226-2016.
