CAPE GAZETYE, Friday, February 21- February 27, 1997. 41 Squ king Mariner's are now ta shape in Rehoboth By Trish Vernon Richard Derrickson said. Despite the llth hour decision Noting their endeavor to pro- to totally revamp the project at the vide synergy among the retail site of the old "Strand" complex shops, he stressed that they want straddling the second blocks of their tenants to be experienced Rehoboth and Baltimore Avenue, cousins Richard and Bob Derrick- son axe expecting the retail com- plex to he completed by mid-May. Original plans for "Derrickson Station," which has been renamed Mariner's Square, called for in- corporating the shell of the old building within the structure, of- fering six retail shops on the ground floor and two restaurants on the second floor. But in November, the cousins were forced to totally revamp the project, which is now being built as a one-story structure of eight stores, 1,100 to 7,500 square feet in size. "So far we've leased out 50 per- cent of the stores to upscale retail- ers who are either moving from another location or providing a new adaptation of a present store," business people who will operate on a 10 to 12-month basis, rather than strictly seasonally. Each shop's facade will feature a different siding, shading and ar- chitectural interest in the "seaside Victorian" motif to give Mariner's Square an old-timey village at- mosphere. A corridor will run through from Rehoboth to Baltimore av- enues on the east side of the parcel "which will be designed to be very inviting to the public. We want to give people a secondary reason to stop by the center, so we've concentrated upon making the architecture and landscaping interesting and appealing," Der- rickson said, of the design by Charlie Bowen of Salisbury. They are presently working on fleshing out initial ideas to offer r OFFICE & ART Mariner's Square is quickly taking shape in downtown Re- hoboth Beach and will feature eight retail shops and areas for displaying artwork along the outdoor corridor when finished in May. In days gone by, a sailor would re- turn home from sea laden with gifts for his sweetheart. One popular such gift native to Barbados was a "sailor's valen- tine", a hexagonal or pentagonal facing plate sized work comprised of a variety of seashells in a par- ticular mosaic design. Each half of the valentine will be three feet in size and will be sit- uated in a gazebo for protection from the elements. The Derricksons are also dis- cussing proposals with other artists in an effort to provide unique flair for Mariner's Square and its collection of individual shops. MOVING SA .
