Cape girls continue "quiet riot", take northern division By Susan Frederick Cape Henlopen High School's Lady Vikings have been the "Qui- et Riot" in Delaware schoolgirl basketball this season. True to their unheralded (18-0, 19-2) record, they came and went quick- ly in Milford on Tuesday night, Feb. 20, trouncing the Lady Bucs 70-47 and securing the Henlopen North with little fanfare but lots of talent. "This team has a quiet confi- dence," said Coach Ralph Bayko in an earlier season interview. "I wouldn't call it cocky, because I wouldn't allow that. But they have a confidence in themselves and their abilities no matter who they play." "We were happy we won (the Northern Division)," said junior Katie DelCampo after the game, "but we didn't really jump up and scream; we just kind of acted like 'That's good m we won the North'." DelCampo led the field with 21 points Tuesday night and pulled down 10 rebounds. "We're a team. We don't just have one per- son who scores all the points," she said. "We came out to play early in the game and got ahead fast, and we contrOlled rebounding." Maggie Widdoes pulled down 14 rebounds and contributed 16 points in the game, while senior Wilma Coursey contributed 10 points and 11 rebounds to edge closer to her 1,000 point career mark. Tynisha Downing scored 16 for Milford. Last Thursday, Feb. 15, Cape traveled to Caesar Rodney and beat the Riders 67-48. Edging the Riders 35-33 in the first half, the Vikings came out in the second half to outseore CR 20-8 in the third and 22-9 in the fourth for the eventual score. Coursey and Widdoes con- tributed 19 apiece in last Thurs- day's game with 19. Sophomore Kim Smith added 11, while Del- Campo scored 10. Cape travels to Sussex Central tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. for its last regular game of the season. On Tuesday night, ,Feb. 27, the Vikings will face Laurel, the win- ner of the Southern Division, for the Henlopen Championship. CAPE GAZEIWE, Friday, February 23. February 29, 1996 - 43 k. ttn pho Doug Parke, wrestling at 171 for Cape, deeis/oned his Milford opponent 15-3 to secure 5th. Wrestlers advance to f'mals By Dave Frederick Freshman Straughn Gorman didn't even know he was wrestling in the Henlopen Conference Champi- onships until Friday morning, the same day he found out there was no school and that the two day Confer- ences had been pushed back a day to Saturday-Sun- day. "The great thing about Straughn is that he doesn't know or care about who he's wrestling," said Coach Chris Mattioni. "He just goes out and wrestles." Gorman, who was replacing Eric Beaman, who bowed out due to illness, surprised his coach and himself by wrestling back to the consolation finals where he dominated Morton Wooton of Laurel to win third place honors. Frank Payton, 189 pounds, also finished third by decisioning July of Dover 21-9. The top six finishers in each weight class advance to this weekend's State Championship meet at Delaware State College. Also advancing to the state meet are Tommy En- gel, 130, 4th; Joe Deloy, 145, 4th; Matt Martin, 152, 4th; and Doug Parke, 171, 5th. UNIFORMS - ACCESSORIES A..O.eu,e.c.oes. co.
