CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, February 2&-lebruary29,-199@53 .... East Coast Upholstery and Canvas open full time By Dennis Forney Keith Schmierer spent several hours a week doing upholstery work part time in his garage for the past 13 years. Now that federal budget cuts are starting to hit home, Schmierer has moved into the business full time. "I worked for the National Guard for 10 years but I was let go last September because of a Re- duction In Force action. They said they were out of money be- cause of budget cutbacks." Specializing in furniture, auto seats and boat seats, Schmierer practices his trade in a workshop located next to his home on Rt. 23 southwest of Lewes. He calls his company East Coast Upholstery and Canvas. "Like many of the canvas and upholstery people in the area, I learned the trade from Bob Palmer who had Palmer's Upholstery on Rt. 1. You have to know how to line up the seams properly, how to hide the fasten- ers, and how to avoid wrinkles or pouches. You have to enjoy the work to do a good job and I enjoy it. Items look good when I'm fin- ished and I guarantee the work I do." Schmierer works primarily in vinyl, imitation leather, cloth and canvas. "I did some leather up- holstery work for a while for Leona Helmsley's Georgetown Aircraft Service at the Sussex County Airport. We outfitted ex- ecutive jets. Now 0nly her jet is left at the airport and no more out- fitting is done there." Schmierer said he also enjoys upholstering and recovering an- tique furniture as long as the wood is in good shape. East Coast Up- holstery and Canvas is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and at other times by ap- pointment. Call 947-0633. Keith Schmiere is shown in the midst of a project.
