24 - CAPE GAZETTE - Friday, Feb. 24 - Monday, Feb. 27, 2006 Java Beach no more; Hamer to open Claws Crab House Claws Crab House is set to open in May at what used to be a popu- lar coffeehouse on Rehoboth Avenue in Rehoboth Beach. Java Beach owner Jeff Hamer plans to replace the caf6 with a seafood and American cuisine restaurant. The family-style crab house will have 90 seats in the main din- ing room with nine bar seats. A 398-square-foot patio will offer an additional 22 seats. The restaurant is operated under JR Claws LLC of which Hamer and Rich Gammon are principal owners, along with others. Rehoboth Beach Commissioners, on Tuesday, Feb. 21, unanimously approved a per- mit of compliance request to oper- ate the new restaurant, which will also serve alcohol and take-out food. Hamer, previous owner of Arena's Bar & Deli and current owner of Fins Fish House, has operated businesses in Rehoboth for 16 years. "When everyone in town is closing their businesses, I'm opening another one up," said Hamer. The former Java Beach Coffee House & Caf6 building at 167 Rehoboth Ave. is more than 100 years old. Hamer will maintain the building as much as possible in its original style. He will remove the second floor for more openness. A small storage shed for crabs and trash willalso be built on site, which will be air-condi- tioned to entrap odors. "We want it to look like an old dockside crab house," he said. The new restaurant will have a metal roof and dockside lighting and will be painted white with red trim. The restaurant will Offer full lunch and dinner from March through January, closing on Jan. 5 and opening on March 1 every year.
