31 CAPE GAZETTE - Friday, Feb. 24 - Monday, Feb. 27, 2006 - 35 Fay Jacobs assumes ownership of A&M Books Publishing house caters to women's stories Before feminist literary icon Anyda Marchant died in January, two weeks before her 95th birth- day, she paved the way for her publishing company, A&M Books, to live on as a voice for feminist writers. Marchant, under the pen name Sarah Aldridge, was the author of 14 classic novels and, along with her partner Muriel CrawfOrd, founded Naiad Press in 1972. Naiad became one of the most successful feminist publishing imprints in the country. Marchant was president of Naiad from its inception until 1995. Marchant, along with Crawford founded A&M Books of Rehoboth Beach in 1995, after withdrawing from Naiad Press. \\; "O, Mistress Mine" is one of the 14 Sarah Aldridge novel that will be available in inde- pendent book stores. For a decade JACOBS she was my friend, mentor, publisher and the most demanding boss I've ever had. I hope I can continue to steer A&M in the direction Anyda envi- sioned," Jacobs said. According to Jacobs, that includes making available all 14 of the groundbreaking Sarah Aldridge novels. "The Aldridge novels combined rich historical detail, and romance," said Jacobs, "along with the fight, in every single book, for strong women to over- come the barriers placed on their careers and relationships by 19th and 20th century society."
