Among other things a Shrove Tuesday king or queen will be crowned based on whose piece of cake contains a hidden surprise. The event is free and open to the public. Shrove Tuesday, also called Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday, is the last day before the penitential sea- son of Lent in the Christian calen- dar. Pancakes are traditionally eaten on that day to use up the butter and other animal fat in a house- hold prior to a traditional Lenten prohibition on them, and partying on Shrove Tuesday is the last hur- rah before the solemnity of Lent. On Ash Wednesday, March 1, St. Paul's will impose ashes and celebrate the Holy Eucharist at 7:30 a.m noon and 7 p.m. All are welcomed and encour- aged to participate in this wor- ship. Ash Wednesday initiates the Lenten season of self-examina- tion and preparation for Easter. Ashes are imposed upon the fore- heads of the faithful and symbol- ize repentance, self-denial and mortality. As St. Paul's priest, the Rev. Earl Beshears, imposes the ashes on each peni- tent, he will a y , S'Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return." Beshears said, "Shrove BESHEARS Tuesday is party time and a lot of fun, but immediately we turn the corner and observe the self-denial of Lent to prepare for the joyousness of Easter. Such highs and lows in the Christian calendar mirror the ups and downs of our lives. St. Paul's welcomes everyone to join us in living and celebrating our common life in Jesus," Directions to St. Paul's and information about other worship during Lent may be found at wwve.stpaulsgeorgetown.org.
