In ceremonies held Feb. 1 at East Millsboro Elementary School and February 2nd at Long Neck Elementary, the Greater Millsboro Kiwanis Club of{icially started its eleventh annual Terrific Kids program for first and second grade students. The program is supported by Kiwanis International, and encourages stu- dents to demonstrate character development and good citizenship by helping others. Teachers use the program guidelines to encourage character building and good behavior in the classroom. They award points to their students for good deeds done during school. A list of "terrific" qualities includes being Thoughtful, Enthusiastic, Respectful, Responsible, Inclusive, Friendly, Inquisitive, and Capable. East Millsboro Elementary School uses the Kiwanis Terrific Kids program in conjunction with its own Character Counts program to keep students focused on positive achievement. In the Terrific Kids program, students receive prizes for the number of points they earn, including pencils, bookmarks, magnets, and McDonald's coupons. At the end of the school year, students who reach the final goal of 25 points receive a pro- C Submitted photo gram certificate, Terrific Kids T- shirt, and a chance to win a new bicycle and helmet. The Greater Millsboro Kiwanis Club supplies the awards, with the help of local sponsors including Meoli Company McDonald's and Realty Executives, both of Rehoboth Beach, and the Heartwood Corporation of Georgetown. As part of last year's program, the Greater Millsboro Kiwanis Club awarded certificates and T- shirts to first and second grade students in a ceremony held June 13, 2005 at East Millsboro Elementary School. In the grand prize drawing for new bicycles and helmets, first grade winners were Elisabeth Dedios and Ben Schneider, and second grade win- ners were Angela Hitchens and Rabble Marcelle. A special award was presented last year to second grader Amber Wisniewski, who received a plaque in recognition of her bravery and heroism for protecting her younger sister dur- ing a dog attack. The Greater Miltsboro Kiwanis Club is very proud of the community's Terrific Kids and teachers for their many accomplishments.
