94 - CAPE GAZETTE 6" - Friday, Feb. 24 - Monday, Feb. 27, 2006 I I I By Rob Rector Special to the Cape Gazette Perhaps it was the curse of Cuba Gooding Jr.'s opus "Snow Dogs," or maybe the incredibly abysmal trailer for the Tim Allen- starring remake of "The Shaggy Dog" that preceded the film, but hope for "Eight Below: Inspired by a True Story" was as slight as Paul Walker's acting ability. The whole "Inspired by a True Story" tagline (which is actually part of the title), is getting as tired as author James (A Million Little Pieces) Frey's pleas for forgive- Movie Review ness. And the poster for the flick is certainly not short on hyperbole: "The Most Amazing Story of Survival, Friendship and Adventure Ever Told." Wow. I bet those rugby guys who had to eat each other to stay alive in the Andes are feeling a bit slighted about this time. Anyway, Walker plays Jerry, an Antarctic expedition guide who, against his better judgment, takes a scientist to find a tiny meteorite in the snow. For fear that the ice may crack, Jerry and the scientist take a sled led by eight Huskies who tug their tired butts across the tundra. A storm is forecast, and the expedition must come to a quick close, which means shuttling the crew out of its gussied-up igloo and back to civilization. There is only one problem. Well, eight problems, actually.
