- "S4"xIAPE , Frida,qFeb'26"vmretz', 2000 (;ull House offers needed relief for caretakers Gull House visitors spend their days singing, playing bingo, exer- cising and taking part in a variety of other structured activities. In between, they have a hot, nutri- tious meal while enjoying each other's company. If it wasn't for Beebe's Gull House Adult Activities Center, spouses, children, or others would need to provide constant care for the Gull House clients, most of whom have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's or other debilitating diseases. The Gull House staff in- cludes nurses and certified nurs- ing assistants. A recreational ther- apist plans activities to stimulate clients both physically and men- tally to strengthen and preserve their abilities. The main goals of the Gull House program are to forestall nursing home placement; support and improve clients' social, men- tal, emotional and physical condi- tion; enhance the clients' quality of life; and provide relief to fami- ly caretakers. The program is made available largely due to a grant from Delaware Health and Social Services, Division of Ser- vices for Aging and Adults with Physical Disabilities. The current $249,787 grant provides funding for 28.5 visitors through Sept. 30. Gull House currently is accept- ing referral calls and applicants into the program. Applicants must be at least 60 years old and in need of constant supervision. They also should have two diag- noses, such as Alzheimer's or re- lated dementia, stroke, Parkin- son's, diabetes, and heart or lung disease. Gull House also offers a program for up to five people 18 years and older who have a Med- icaid waiver. Care is available from 7:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. daily with transportation provided for eligible clients by the Delaware Association for Specialized Tran- sit (DAST). A light breakfast and a hot cooked lunch are provided daily. For more information about the services offered at the Gull House, call Kathy Schlitter, coor- dinator, at 226-2160. nmmsd photo Enjoying a day at Gull House are (l-r) Bill Fawcett, Emma Truitt, Shirley Bouch and Lars Leaf while recreation thera- pist Kathleen Graham-Frey instructs ellenta on exercise. "I prefer to cross train by break- ing it up like that and I run indoors to try to save some wear and tear on my legs," she said.
