40- CE GAzET, Friday, February 28- March 6, 1997 Information sought for &apos;97 Ecotoudsm Guide Delaware's nature-based tourism is the focus of an upcom- ing publication, and businesses, environmental organizations and state agencies who have an inter- est in the environment have until Friday, March 7 to update or in- clude their information. "Ecotourism, or nature-based tourism, is defined as responsible travel to natural areas that con- serves the environment and sus- tains the well-being of the local people," said Jim Falk, marine recreation and tourism specialist for the University of Delaware Sea Grant Marine Advisory Ser- vice. Lt year, Sea Grant helped develop the state's first eco- tourism guide in conjunction with the Sussex County Convention and Tourism Commission and At- lantic Publications, Inc. It also received the Ecotourism Award at the Gover- nor's Tourism Awards ceremony in November. Thanks to this suc- cess, a new guide is being devel- oped for 1997, and information for it is now being collected. "Our goal with this project is to develop a coordinated effort in na- ture-based tourism for Delaware," Falk said. "Our target audience is residents and visitors who appre- ciate the environment and are committed to protecting it, from bicyclists to bird-watchers, in oth- er words, people who can help the economy without harming the en- vironment.
