48 - CAPE GAZETgE, Friday, February 28- March 6, 1110"/ Festival management seminar set for Sussex Does the organization for which you work or volunteer hold spe- cial events and festivals? Have you ever wondered why some events are successful - even prof- itable - while others seem lacklus- ter and lose money? Discover the secrets behind creating and man- aging successful events and festi- vals at a one-day seminar, set for Wednesday, March 12, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Delaware Tech- nical & Community College's Owens Campus in Georgetown. The keynote speaker for the event will be Linda Chick, a long- time, successful businesswoman and co-owner of Chick's in Har- rington and other businesses. Chick has been involved with nu- merous events at the Delaware State Fairgrounds in Harrington, and will discuss overall event management. She will provide de- tails on how to plan and budget, address vendors and contracts, in- surance and liability issues and touch on developing sponsor- ships. One of the key factors to any successful event is building a good workforce. Kay Powell, Volunteer Coordinator at the Delaware Agriculture Museum in Dover, will stress the importance of recruiting good volunteers, and give tips on how to Iain, manage, and retain them. Lisa Challenger, Tourism Coor- dinator for Worcester County, Md., will share her success stories on marketing and promoting spe- cial events. Challenger will speak on maximizing efforts by collabo- rating with other organizations, developing relationships with the media, consistency and quality vs. quantity. Following lunch, participants will work in teams under the di- rection of qualified facilitators to create an array of special events, from one-day, single site events to multi-day, multi-site events. The hands-on experience will stress organization skills, problem solv- ing, planning, budgeting and mar- keting. At the close of the session, each team will share their results with the group. "The hands-on aspect of the seminar is in response to a previ- ous seminar we held on festivals and special events," said Jim Falk, of the University of Delaware's Sea Grant Program, one of the sponsors of the event. "Partici- pants told us they wanted to roll up their sleeves and get creative. This portion of the program will provide that opportunity." The program is being hosted by the Sussex County Convention and Tourism Commission, the University of Delaware Sea Grant Program and the Small Business Development Center. The cost of the full-day program is $35, which includes materials and lunch. To register, call the Small Busi- ness Development Office at 856- 1555. Major credit cards will be honored. muo,,,.75ur00, [ uQuo, .7st,r,:, | ,E,:, cAs00 Sussex County's Best Selection Of Wines EDIDBOBOBOItDDBOmOBOBOBO [] CASINO NIGHT i i Friday, March 7 o_ .o _o o Midnight : 0 0 Door Prizes Cape Heniopen Elks Lodge Route 23, Lewes From Rehoboth, turn left at F'we Points onto Route 9, then go about 25 yards and bear left to Route 23 *400 Admission "Refreshments" (Must be 21 years of age - I.D. required) Call 645-7016 for more Information IIOIIOIIOIIOBOIIOIIOIIOIIOIIOIIOIIOIIOIIOII O O O O O O O O O O O O O --Wine & Spirits--- NEW LOW PRICES Bm BB CHARDONNAY 750ML Benziger $10.99 Canyon Road $6.99 Ch.
