Shore Orecl,(, opens in Rehoboth By Jen EUingsworth Ultralight Oreck XL vacuum cleaners, made famous by televi- sion and radio commercials tout- ing their cleaning prowess, are now cleaning up in the Cape Re- gion. Husband and wife Carolyn and Bev McKay, along with their son, Matthew, opened Shore Oreck XL on Route 1, across from Rehoboth Outlets 3. Open now for two weeks, Shore Oreck XL features all eight mod- 'els of Oreck XL vacuum cleaners, as well as industrial-strength cleaning chemicals, air filtration devices, water purifying systems and steam cleaner rentals. The store also carries vacuum cleaner bags for a wide variety of manu- facturers. Originally from the Rockville, Md. area, the McKays own a home in the Spring Lake develop- ment near Dewey Beach. Carolyn McKay said she and Bev liked the hometown atmosphere of the area so much that they decided to relo- cate. "We wanted to get out of the big-city atmosphere," she said. Matthew splits his time between Rehoboth Beach and the Wash- ington, D.C. area, where he works with other Oreck stores. The McKays were first intro- duced to Oreck vacuum cleaners when Carolyn said she grew tired of lifting her heavy vacuum up and down the stairs. After seeing the results of the Oreck XL vacuum cleaners, which were invented by founder and namesake David Oreck some 30 years ago, the family soon fell in love with the compact cleaners. The rest is Oreck vacuum history. The full-size Oreck XL vacu- ums, weighing in at a mere eight pounds, range in price from $299 to $475 and have an assortment of different distinctive features that make them unique. The "Helping Hands" grip, a trademark feature developed by an orthapaedic surgeon, elimi- nates squeezing and twisting and is especially useful for older peo- ple and arthritis sufferers. Demonstrating the vacuum's lightweight design, Matthew McKay said the vacuums are very easy to lift and each has a self-ad- justing height for various types of carpeting. The Oreck XL vacuums also feature handles that drop almost fiat for cleaning under low furni- ture and make the cleaners easy to store in a closet or by even hang- ing on the wall. A unique "Microsweep" feature of the vacuums gets bare floors clean without hoses, attachments or adjustments. Matthew said Oreck vacuums have 11,000 bristles that revolve twice as fast as regular cleaners, and also feature side bristles that can be used to clean around the legs of furniture. Another feature that Oreck boasts is that its cleaners are hy- poallergenic. While other vacuums can emit dust particles, the Oreck vacuums have bags, "similar to a surgeon's mask," which retain up to 99.7 percent of those particles, said Matthew. Although the eight different models each offer different fea- tures, such as the length of their cords, headlamps or speeds, each has an average life of between 12 and 15 years, he said, which makes an Oreck vacuum cleaner a worthwhile investment. The cleaners have full, three- year parts and labor warranties. Bev and Matthew McKay also do repairs on all types of vacuum cleaners at Shore Oreck XL, and Continued on page 54 ,.
