10 - CAPE GAZETTE - Tuesday, March 6 - Thursday, March 8, 2007 Lewes architectural panel OKs Shore Medical building By Heno' ]. Evans Yr. GazeUesU The Lewes Commercial Architectural Review Commission has approved plans "for a medical office building that would replace the Shore Medical Associates/Saliba Family Trust building at 431 Savannah Road. The commission unanimously approved the building design at its Thursday, March 1 meeting. The meeting marked the third time that project coordinator Michael Makowski submitted proposed designs for the commis- sion's consideration. Lewes-based architect Michael Cohalan, in designs submitted earlier, had proposed a stucco exterior for the two-story struc- ture'. But some commissioners said a stucco commercial building in the city's historic district would appear too contemporary and rejected its proposed use. Cohalan changed the building design to a predominantly brick exterior, which the commission approved. The redesigned building includes horizontal lapped siding, white trim elements and a mix of raised-seam metal roofing and asphalt roofing. The Commission at meetings earlier this year approved demoli- tion of the existing Shore Medical building, approved the project's site and landscaping plans and approved proposed renovations to a structure at the rear of the prop- erty that would continue to be used as offices. Makowski said the rear build- ing would be renovated using cedar shake shingle siding and asphalt shingle roofing. The commission's final approval of the proposed main office building design was contin- gent on Makowski's agreement to make additional changes. Makowski, at the commission's request; said windows would be added to the Beebe Avenue side of the building and vents would be added beneath the building's gables and on the cupola tower. He also agreed to add horizontal elements to portions of the build- ing. Commissioner Christine Thomas said the horizontal ele- ments would reduce the building's appearance of mass. "It's a. big building and when it comes down to this fine detail, it's what's going to make or break it," Thomas said. Makowski said they plan to start demolition of the office building by May.
