That's why she will maintain a brisk pace for the drawing class she teaches beginning March 18 at the Rehoboth Art League. "We begin with still lifes, but move quickly on to figure draw- ing and developing each student's own style," Schnick said. "After all, no one wants to keep drawing oranges forever." Schnick, who graduated from the Maryland Institute of Art, has had her work exhibited at the Bal- timore Museum of Art, and the Peale Museum in Baltimore. Her easygoing personality makes her a perfect teacher for beginners. And she incorporates several interest- ing techniques into her beginning style. For example, she devotes one whole class to contour drawing. This is an exercise in which the student touches pencil to paper, then draws an object looking only at the object - not the paper. Schnick said this forces the stu- dents to look carefully at the ob- ject. "It's amazing what happens, and it can be lots of fun." Schnick also stresses the need for getting into the habit of &aw- ing every day. There is homework for this class," she noted. "I tell students to go home and draw anything...the dog, the cat, any- thing. Then they must bring in what they've drawn since the last session to class." Students share their work with other class members for helpful critiques. Schnick's class offers an excel- lent basis on which to build a stu- dent's own means of artistic ex- pression. For those who wish to learn the classical approach to the effective drawing of objects and portraits, her class begins Tuesday, March 18 from 9:30 a.m. to noon, and continues every Saturday until April 29. The fee is $90 for Art League members and $100 for non-mem- bers. Call 227-8408 for more infor- mation.
