24 - CAPE GAZETYE, Friday, March 11 - March 14, 2005 (IB campaigns for funding for I Inlet fac.ility By Jim Westhoff Once housing for single Coast Guard men and women, a two- story wooden barracks at Indian River Inlet, is set to become the headquarters building for the Cen- ter for the Inland Bays. At 4,300 square feet, the new state-of-the-art headquarters will have a large meeting room, a community room with resources for the public, and enough offices to house the entire staff of the cen- ter. Center for the Inland Bays Ex- ecutive Director Ed Lewandowski said he hopes the building will be finished this year, but that will de- pend upon how quickly funds can be raised. Although more than $300,000 has been raised, Lewandowski estimates that the project will cost $1 million. Still, he said, the location of the new center could hardly be better. "It puts us right in the bays," he said. "Right now, we're not even in the watershed." The center's offices are current- ly located on Route 1 in Lewes, north of the Route 9 intersection. The rented facility does not have a meeting space large enough for staff or board meetings. "So far, we've been using borrowed and rented space," Lewandowski said. With board meetings of nearly 50 people, "we have the need to seat a large group of people," Lewandowski said. The new building will have space for large committee meet- ings, educational programs and special events. In addition, the building will have a community area where the public can learn about the bays, do research and talk with employees of the center. The weather has also hampered construction work. "When the weather cooperates, we'll be able to finish painting the trim," he said. "When the trim is complete, we'll install the siding." But to finish the exterior, they will need to raise more money. When the exterior of the building looks good, then it will be a show- case for potential fundraisers, Lewandowski said. Former Gov. Russell Peterson is honorary chairman of the cam- paign. To contribute to the cam- paign, "A Building for Our Bays," contact Lewandowski at 645- 7325.
