36 - CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, March 11 - March 14, 2005 Local businesses participate in Shamrocks Against Dystrophy Through St. Patrick's Day, mil- lions of Americans will paint the town green by participating in the Muscular Dystrophy Associa- tion's Shamrocks Against Dystro- phy program. The popular MDA tradition, led by internationally renowned singer Maureen Mc- Govern, runs through Thursday, March 17. Patrons of thousands of busi- nesses nationwide, including su- permarkets, convenience stores, restaurants and other retailers, are supporting the fight against neu- romuscular diseases by buying and signing $1 and $5 Shamrock mobiles to hang in the business locations. Locally, the following busi- nesses are participating in the program: SuperFresh, Shore Stop, Taco Bell, Applebee's Dash In, Happy Harry's, Acme and Gentle Touch Car Wash. In 2004, Shamrocks Against Dystrophy, the nation's largest charitable campaign associated with St. Patrick's Day, raised more than $12 million through the efforts of volunteers, partici- pating businesses and sponsors. For the fifth year, McGovern, a member of MDA's board of di- rectors and a favorite performer on the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon, is serving as the chair- woman of Shamrocks Against Dystrophy. "I understand the value of this special MDA program," said Me- Govern, whose teenage niece is affected by one of the diseases covered by the association. "MDA has helped improve the life of someone I love, and its re- search gives my family, and tens of thousands of other families, hope for a cure." Funds raised through Sham- rocks support MDA's vital re- search and service programs, in- cluding summer camps and local clinics. "Shamrocks Against Dy- strophy provides a lighthearted, public way to support MDA's worldwide research and its na- tionwide service program, includ- ing 235 clinics and 90 summer camps," said MDA President and CEO Robert Ross. MDA is a voluntary health agency working to defeat more than 40 neuromuscular diseases through programs of worldwide research, comprehensive servic- es, and far-reaching professional and public health education.
