To demonstrate the process of preparing for an evening out, Darlin performed a sort of reverse strip tease - starting with under- garments and then adding layer by layer with the occasional help of an audience member to manage the dozens of hooks and clasps, buttons and laces. "Every wealthy woman had a lady's maid," Darlin said. "It was a big job, help- ing a lady of society change clothes three to five times a day." Pads added to the top of the already padded and ruffled corset added another few inches to her bos- om, and a "bust perfector" smoothed things all out and added even more fullness.
