Karl Chalabala photo North Georgetown Elementary gets a lesson in jazz The students at North Georgetown Elementary learned about the birth of jazz, Feb 28, from jazz songbird Tia Clarke. Clarke, originally from Washington, D.C., performs in venues throughout the states, singing jazz standards. On this afternoon, she took the fourth- and fifth-grade students through the early history of New Orleans, which led to the birth of jazz. The students learned the history of New Or- leans from Louis XIV through the slave trade and Civil War. Clarke said all the intermin- gling cultures - creole, black, white - gave rise to the only American music form. Clarke said she became interested in teaching the history of jazz to young children be- cause of her grandson. "He said he liked the doo-wap, doo-wap, doo-wap," she said.
