38 CAPE GAZETI'E, Friday, March 13 March 19, I998 Mind-body connection promt00tes better health By David Simon, M.D. Despite major advances in the understanding of disease mecha- nisms gained through the window of medical science, our communi- ties continue to be plagued by epi- demics of illness, many of which are preventable. We are no longer dying from smallpox, polio or malaria; rather, it is now cancer, heart disease and chemical addic- tions that rav- age our people. We have been operating under SIMON a world model that, simply stated, views human beings as physical machines that have learned to manufacture thoughts, feelings and awareness. While this mechanistic model of the body has been extremely useful in acute illness and has saved many lives, it is incomplete and often sows the seeds for health problems in the future. It has been estimated that more than 1.5 million people develop hospital acquired infections each year, often from new virulent strains of bacteria that have arisen as a result of the excessive use of antibiotics; more than one-third of patients in hospitals may be suf- fering from complications of med- ical treatments; and the No. 1 cause of drug addiction in the world is not street drugs but med- ical prescriptions - legally pre- scribed by physicians. The risk factors for the most common killers in our society, heart disease and cancer, largely reflect our day-to-day choices in life - what we eat, how we handle stress and what noxious sub- stances we put into our bodies. Integrated mind-body medicine recognize that a human being is an extraordinary and dynamic field of intelligence. The choices and interpretations we make in our lives directly influence the health of our minds and bodies. Expanding scientific research supports the perspective that we are not passive victims of lurking pathogens but can actively pro- mote our own well-being. We can create higher levels of health by making positive, life supporting choices. Health is not merely the absence of a definable disease process, but a higher state of consciousness in which body, mind and spirit are known as an integrated whole. Scientific Research on Mind-Body Medicine: Meditation Meditation techniques elicit reproducible physiological changes, including reduced respi- ratory rates, lowered oxygen con- sumption, increased skin resis- tance and coherent brainwave pat- terns. These changes are consis- tent with a state of relaxed aware- I Creating Health class offerred March 16 Creating Health is an eight-week class, developed by doctors Deepak Chopra and David Simon, offering a step-by-step, applied, guided walk- through of the ayurvedic approach to well-being. Participants identify their mind-body constitution type, which determines levels of exercise, learning styles, diet preferences and energy patterns. Each lesson incor- porates an aspect of health into life - meditation, nutrition, exemise (including basic yoga), aromatherapy, music, being in tune with nature's rhythms and massage. Groups often plan snacks and dinners. Beebe Frazer will facilitate a class, beginning Monday, March 16, in Lewes. Daily practice of meditation and relaxation techniques have been found beneficial in the treatment of a number of common health concerns, including hypertension, chronic pain, irritable bowel dis- ease, anxiety and infertility. Nutrition Diet plays an important role in most of the common illnesses plaguing our society, particularly cardiovascular disease and cancer. There is no question that a diet lower in animal fats and higher in natural fruit and vegetable sources of antioxidants and fiber can improve health. Vegetarians as a group have less obesity, reduced serum cho- lesterol and lower blood pressure. The incidence of heart disease, cancer and stroke is reduced in people who eat less animal fat and more fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Massage The skin is a rich source of neu- rochemicals that can be stimulated through massage and therapeutic touch. Studies have shown that massage can improve the growth rate in premature babies and reduce the development of fatty deposits in blood vessels. Aromatherpy The sense of smell is closely linked to ancient parts of the human brain that govern emotion and memory. The use of fragrant essential oils has been shown to reduce depression and insomnia to improve immune function. Yoga and Breathing Exercises Preliminary studies have shown that yoga and yogic breathing exercises can have a positive health effect, increasing energy and decreasing emotional liabili- ty. Yoga can help reduce discom- fort in people with arthritis and breathing exercises have been helpful in people with asthma.
