oE,GTTE, Friday, March ,3... March, 19 1998 - 39 Beebe Trauma Unit undergoes consultation Show,.,. you . LOVE'om... visit for first step toward trauma designation KJ00IT fruit cap! At Beebe Medical Center's request, the medical center recent- ly underwent a trauma, consulta- tion visit by the American College of Surgeons. Beebe is seeking a level III trauma designation with- in the State of Delaware. The purpose of the consultation visit was to explore Beebe's strengths and weaknesses in rela- tion to trauma care. The visit pro- vides the hospital with direction, and lends focus to the areas that require change. The Delaware State Trauma Committee decided that the American College of Surgeons would be the credentialing body in Delaware. The American College of Sur- geons have strict criteria that must be met by hospitals before they will authorize a designation status. It was highly recommended by the State Trauma Committee that each hospital undergo a consultation visit before the final verification is sought. The consultation visit is meant to be an educational tool. There is no "pass" or "fail" to a consulta- tion visit. It is meant to be a learn- ing process. Since the trauma criteria from the American College of Surgeons is so strict, that the consult visit assists in identifying where weak- nesses and deficits lie. The surveyors not only point them out, but also offer sugges- tions on how to correct them. The surveyors also identify the hospital's strong points and capa- bilities of achieving a given trau- ma level. They believed with continued efforts as demonstrated, Beebe could obtain a level III credential by the American College of Sur- geons. The recent consultation visit at Beebe was a "mock site review." This means that physicians visited various departments within the hospital and asked questions of the staff. This was done to prepare Beebe for verification. The verification visit follows approximately one year .after the consultation visit.
