30th Annual q3reat Delaware Kite Festival slated fcr Cape park April 10 The Great Delaware Kite Festi- val, cosponsored by the Lewes Chamber of Commerce and the Delaware Division of Parks and Recreation, will be held at Cape Henlopen State Park on Good Fri- day, April 10. (Rain date Satur- day, April 11). This popular an- num event attracts kite flyers and spectators from throughout Delaware and the surrounding states. Established 30 years ago when the Maharajah of Bharatpur, In- dia, challenged Delaware's gover- nor to a kite flying contest, the competition has proved to be a crowd pleaser. The championship continued year after year and in time people began coming with their own kites. Last year's festi- val drew record numbers to Cape Henlopen Park to watch competi- tors vie for 18 prizes. They also were treated to stunt kite flying demonstrations by professionals. This year will commemorate the 30th anniversary of the festival with a re-enactment of the original "duel" staged as part of the Ma- harajah's challenge. The Valli Boyz, a professional stunt kite fly- ing group, is donating two hand- made commemorative kites to honor the longevity of the event. Business and community lead- ers have donated awards for novice and advanced competitors of all ages. Six special class awards will be designated for su- perlatives, such as the smallest and the most senior competitor. The competitor's entrance fee is $1 for flyers up to 17 years old, $2 for all others. Competitors can al- so pay an additional $2 to com- pete in the Highest Kite Award category, which will take place at 12:15 p.m. for all ages. There is no charge to watch the competi- tions. There is a nominal special event fee to enter the park, howev- er, which is collected per car at the entrance to the park. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. The children's and teen's compe- titions take place from 10 a.m. to noon, followed by the awards cer- emony for the morning competi- tions. The adult, stunt kite, novice individual precision and open in- dividual ballet competitions fol- low the highest kite competition. The awards ceremony for the af- ternoon competitions concludes the day's activities. The entire day's activities will be announced from a stage area by two veteran masters of cere- monies - Dan Gaffney from Eagle 97.8 and Dennis Fomey from the Cape Gazette. In addition to the flying con- tests, there will be food and sou- venir concessions, stunt kite fly- ing exhibitions and a kite raffle for a specially designed 30th an- niversary commemorative kite.
