50 - CAPE GAZETIE, Friday, March 19 - March 25, 2004 Resort chamber to offer seminar for business leaders Ianda Field featured at April 6 workshop Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce will host a spring seminar series for business leaders to be from 7:30 a.m. to noon, Tuesdays, April 6 and 13, at the Bellmoor Inn in Rehoboth Beach. The two seminars will feature relationship building and leader- ship skills, respectively. They will be led by two locally based and nationally known business consultants, Linda Field, April 6, and Michael Hudson, April 13. The cost is $197 for chamber members and $257 for nonmem- bers. The cost for only one work- shop is $127 for members and $157 for nonmembers. To regis- ter for limited seating, call 227- 6444. A serie of articles will fo- cus on each of the seminars and their instructors. For local business owners and community leaders, this series of- fers a rare opportunity to get pro- fessional and leadership skills training inexpensively and conve- niently. The spring seminars are timed so owners can get the training in half-day sessions before they hire and place their summer employ- ees, who may need their own training. The training will focus on the front line opportunities fac- ing community leaders and the people problems that can be over- come to save time, money and un- necessary stress. Field, the instructor for the April 6 session, will present Building Better Business Rela- tionships. She suggests the ideal participant is the business leader who is the most responsible for sales and revenue as well as the hiring for the business. "This seminar teaches how to improve communication skills by learning your own personal style and recognizing styles of employ- ees, customers and others. "You'll also gain insight into how others see you, and for most people, that.is a real eye-opener," said Field. "You'll also learn how to manage and FIELD work with oth- ers as they use time, handle conflicts and make decisions. Our objective is to bet- ter our personal and professional lives through situational modifi- cation of personal styles and ac- tions. "And if you work as owners on a team, all partners should attend these seminars to get the full ben- efits of improved relationships af- ter the training," she said. Field is managing director of Glade Group, a consortium of management and training consult- ants with more than 30 years ex- perience working as a training di- rector in 40 countries as well as small and large U.S. organiza- tions. She and her husband have resided in the area for-10 years. "Successful Sussex County busi- ness leaders could teach the world about networking with each oth- er," Field said. 'q'hey've been do- ing it well for generations. Now comes a new challenge, the sea- sonal influx of tourists we expect, but many more are choosing to stay permanently and fulltime on our shores." Field is a businesswoman with a mission. She believes business success in today's economic crunch requires even better busi- ness and personal relationships to solve the overwhelming people problems that get in the way. "With all this growth and diversi- ty, labor sources will be increas- ingly scarce and good employees harder to find and train. So most of our growth problems are about people in all their varieties. This suggests a new look at the rela- tionship building skills for busi- ness leaders, and that's why we WELLS FARGO ation's leading retail mortgage len Conventional Loans Purchase and refinance Primary, second homes & investment properties Construction Loans for new homes Knowledgeable, Honest and Reliable Competitive rate financing available on all types of residential properties. "Doing more with less is to- day's business mantra. That adds more distress into the mix, and good relationships are a major stress reducer," Field said. "How- ever, the real opportunity in rela- tionship skills for business leaders is increased sales and happier and better employees. Because we will always be detailing with lim- ited resources, especially people, we need better communications With our employees, our suppliers and most important, our cus- tomers." Field said that goes for signifi- cant others that support business leaders on the homefront. Field represents the persogenics ap- proach to people skills. "It includes a customized per- sonal profile for each attendee, which is the basis for discussion because the first key to under- standing how to improve relation- ships with others is to learn more about yourself," she said. "You start with your personal style of interacting with others be- fore you learn how to recognize styles of others, especially those who are different from you, and who isn't? "While every single person is unique, we tend to fall into pat- terns of interaction that are easy to identify," she said. Of the four primary personality styles, almost 70 percent of the general popula- tion - customers - represents two of the styles that are often the ex- act opposite from those of owners and entrepreneurs. "That means we're outnum- bered and need to make some sig- nificant shifts in ou/communica- tions, if we want to build our busi- ness," Field said. Field said a ma- jor customer complaint is "no- body is listening to me." The first steps are learning to listen, observe, watch for clues and only then respond appropri- ately. "It's very much a detective game; people usually give them- selves away within the first few seconds of meeting them," she said. For more information about the seminars, call 227-2233. C.
