Aurora Grill opens for business in Lewes at Exel's former location By Dennis Forney Sue Cline and Kim Ovitt planned a soft opening last week- end for their new Aurora Grill on Savannah Road. So much for plans. "We thought maybe 20 or 30 people would wander in," said Sue this week. "Not. We served 70 or 80 on our first day. It was steady and we were just trying to get the kinks out. Lewes is defi- nitely the place to be for us. We're already doing 30 to 40 per- cent more business than I had ex- pected." The two, who left their Wash- ington D.C.-area careers last fall to go full time into the restaurant business, completed extensive renovations during the past few months to the former Exel's Restaurant location. "The only thing that's left of the old Exel's is one buffet and the table bases. Everything is else is new or reno- vated." The new Aurora has seating for more than 70 in a dining area fea- turing new blue carpeting under new white ceiling and walls fresh- ly painted white. (There's lots of space on the walls where Cline hopes local artists will want to gallery their works.) Lewes carpenter Jim Darley did extensive work on the restaurant's interior, including decorative, nat- ural wood trim around the large windows, which let in a lot of nat- ural light. Structural posts in the center of the dining room are also artistically turned and painted with bright pastels. "I did a lot of the decorative painting myself," said Sue between pouring cups of coffee and writing out breakfast orders. The new restaurant is serving its meals on new china dishes and pouring its Columbian, dark-roast coffee into ironstone coffee mugs. "We tasted more than 70 different coffees before we decided on what we wanted to serve here. We know a good cup of coffee's important. Many people who were in over the weekend were very complimentary about the new look." Behind the scenes Aurora in- cludes a new plumbing system and new stainless steel counters and kitchen equipment. "We went way over budget in setting up the way we want it to be," said Cline, "but we're in this for the long haul so I think it will work out fine." Cline and Ovitt plan to be open from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. for breakfast and lunch during March and then begin opening at 5 a.m. for break- fast in April. They plan to serve breakfast any time of the day and are also in the process of putting together a dinner menu. "Boy do people want dinner. I've gotten that already. They want some good, comfortable food, so we'll start with that in May. But we don't want to go late. This will al- ways be an early place.
