FRIDAY, MARCH 27 - MONDAY, MARCH 30, 2015 Cape Gazette F Reception slated for April 4 in Lewes Commencing with a reception Saturday, April 4, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Peninsula Gallery will present an exhibition of four fiber artists in a show titled Thread and Fiber by Four. The artists include Betsey VonDreele, Barbara Warden, Sarah Pavlik and Leslie Bowman Friedlander. "This is a first for me", said BJ Clark, gallery owner. "I have wanted to have a show which moved beyond our regular representation of painterly art for a long time. The fiber art of these artists has a Wonderful sense of texture and color." Common to each artist has been their journey to the use of fabric in creating art. Bowman Friedlander's grandfather owned a textile mill in Philadelphia and was always bringing home small samples which her grandmother made into patch- work blankets and doll clothes. Pavlik grew up in a large family where she and her sisters were continuously sewing to make new clothes, and VonDreele grew up in a family watching her mother sew and her grandmother crochet and quilt. And although pulled toward several media as,an artist, she says: "It never crossed my mind to focus on anything but fiber." Warden, a master member of Delaware by Hand and a member of the Artist Ex- change in Lewes, says she stumbled on fabric and thread, and saw immediately the enormous possibility to use colorful "Pickup Stix" by Leslie Bowman Friedlander. fabrics as a substitute for paint in her com- plex abstract designs of fabric and thread. In her work, thread is as important as the fabric, with the thread patterns enhancing a three-dimensional quality to her work. In this exhibition Warden will present three-dimensional, folded painted paper collages in addition to her fiber tapestries. VonDreele, a member of Delaware by Hand and a graduate of Drew Univer- sity and the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, manipulates small strips of fabric into award-winning textile collages re-creating landscapes of the East Coast shore and the rocky coasts of Maine and New England. Any piece of cloth is likely to find its proper place in the building of her col- lages.
