John G. Towsend hired Miss Mary in 1992; he's gone but she's still working "7 should be proud but I'm not. l'm just Mary Moore Williams. I've never felt myself any better than anybody else." Mary Williams arrived at work Tuesday morning this week at 7:45 a.m. - her usual time to get to work. Nina Warren, who works with Miss Mary in bookkeeping at Townsend's, brings her to work. Nina knows the way well enough. She's worked at Townsend's for 43 years. Of course if Nina didn't know the way, Miss Mary would help her out. Miss Mary's worked for Town, end's for 75 years- without a break. "I'll be 39 - backwards - on June 30 of this year. That's 93." In February, more than 100 Townsend's employees crowded into a conference room of the chicken processing company's headquarters on Rt. 24 east of Millsboro. "They all wanted to congratulate Miss Mary on the 75th anniversary of her employ- ment with the company," said Norb Keller, director of financial services for Townsend's. Coleman Townsend, president of the company, was among those gathered. "I think I said I was the third generation of Townsend to work for Miss Mary," said Townsend with a chuckle during an interview of Miss Mary Tues- day morning. They both grinned when Miss Mary held her hands about eight inches apart: "I remember him when he was just this big." Neat as a pin, in a simple blue cotton suit with a blue and white striped blouse and a cameo broach at her throat, Miss Mary shook her head modestly when Keller said that she dresses nicely every day ._ . ., .... "She opens mail for the department and posts outgoing mail. She helps make the bank deposits and helps keep track of the bank accounts. She misses very few days and she's a joy to work with." Miss Mary lives a compact exis- tence with Townsend's at the cen- ter. Everything about her life speaks of longevity and steadi- ness. Miss Mary's been a faithful member of Carey's United Methodist Church all of her life. ("My people carried me there when I was a baby and I've been going ever since," she said.) She and her husband, Edward Williams, were married for 52 years prior to his death in 1977. They met at Townsend's and lived in a house less than a mile from the company's main offices for more than 40 years. And going on 93, Miss Mary's not shopping around for a new job.
