32" CAPE GAZE'IWE, Friday, April 4- April I0, 1997 DuPont Hospital for Children doctor patents new children's headrest Randall Brenn, M.D., an anes- thesiologist at the DuPont Hospi- tal for Children, recently received a patent on a headrest designed to solve the problems of supporting a child's head during an operation. According to Brenn, the new headrest is superior to existing designs of head support because its "one size fits many." The head support most com- monly used by anesthesiologists is a ring available in different sizes to accommodate different size heads. Brenn's headrest is shaped like a boomerang. The patient's head slides into the boomerang until it no longer shifts: "This headrest is designed to slide behind a patient's head and support it as well as possible for surgery," Brenn said, The new headrest is also unique because it does not have to be removed during intubation like the rings. "It solves the problem of reposi- tioning the head for intuhation as well as for surgery. It can remain in place so your hands are free. It saves both time and steps in the process." Brenn conceived of the design two years ago while working at a hospital in Pittsburgh where he and the other anesthesiologists regularly modified head tings to fit different patients. "We had a box full of hundreds of rings, none of which did the job that well." After experimenting with variations of the boomerang shape, he came up with the patent- ed version. A company is making a proto- type of Brenn's headrest, and if all goes well, the product will be manufactured soon. Brenn is planning to design a similar headrest for neonatal patients.
