Cape Gazette ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT FRIDAY, APRIL 5 - MONDAY, APRIL 8, 2013 75 Program April 8 focuses on reading The year 2013 marks the 50th anniversary of Prime Hook Na- tional Wildlife Refuge, which was founded in 1963, and the 10th anniversary of several refuge events including An Evening at the Hook Lecture Series, Nature Photography Contest sponsored by the Friends of Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge, Horse- shoe Crab-Shorebird Festival through a partnership with the Milton Chamber of Commerce, and Partnering to Promote Youth Fishing with the Lower Sussex Bassmasters. To celebrate these anniver- saries and to connect people with nature, many activities, programs and special events are planned. But any time is a good time to visit the refuge, which is open every day one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset in designated ar- eas. The Visitor Center is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. On weekends, the Visitor Cen- ter-is open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. from December through March and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from April through November. Go to primehook or call 302-684-8419 to learn more about other events and programs throughout the yean Upcoming events in April From 10 to 11 a.m., Mon- day, April 8, is P.R.I.M.E. time, which stands for Pre- schooler Reading Initiative to Magnify the Environment. Preschoolers (and their parents) are invited to listen to a nature- based story and participate in a related activity that will help them learn about the environ- ment. Participation is free, but pre- registration is required by calling the refuge office at 302-684-8419. Meet at the refuge auditorium. From 7 to 8 p.m., Thursday, April 11, An Evening at the Hook Lecture Series will offer "Bat Population Studies in Delaware." Join staff from DNREC's Dela- ware Natural Heritage Program and discover the fascinating world of these flying mammals. The lecture is free, open to the public and fun for the entire family. Seating is limited on a first-come, first-served basis in the refuge's auditorium. Light refreshments are available before the lecture at 6:30 p.m. From 10 to 11:30 a.m., Saturday, April 13, in Spring Discovery Hike, participants will experi- ence nature while improving their observation skills and their health during this mid-spring walk with a volunteer guide. Come prepared for the weath- er and expect frequent stops. Binoculars will be available to borrow, or participants may bring their own. Beginner hikers are welcome. Trips are free and open to the public. Meet at the refuge office. From 8 to 11 a.m., Thursday, April 18, is a Birding Field Trip led by volunteer birding guides. Beginners and experienced bird watchers will enjoy observing and learning about the bird spe- cies frequenting the refuge at this time of year. Come prepared for the weather and expect to walk up to a mile. Bring binocu- lars, a field guide and spotting scope (the leader will have spot-. ting scopes also). Binoculars will be available to borrow. Meet at the refuge office. Trips are free, open to the public and last ap- proximately three hours. For more information visit )More information: fws ov Outstanding clinicians headline two-day horse expo April 6-7 in Harrington Three impressive names are among the clinicians and enter- tainers who will headline the Ninth Annual Delaware Horse Expo set for Saturday and Sun- -day, April 6 and Z at the Delaware State Fairgrounds in Harrington, Nationally known TV person- ality Craig Cameron, a native Texan whose show, "Ride Smart," is familiar on RFD TV, will con- duct clinics and demonstrations on horsemanship and horse training. He will also introduce the concept of extreme cowboy racing, a growing competitive sport. Cameron, together with Ryan Dohm of, is the original creator of The Extreme Cowboy Race. Each season he assembles an impres- sive roster of competitors from around the country who vie for the title of Extreme Cowboy Race Champion. At his Double Horn Ranch in BluffDale, Texas, he has designed and hosted five of these races since 2005. During the expo; Cameron will moderate an event patterned after an Extreme-Cowboy Race, which will see 10 professional trainers compete over an ob- stacle course with the winner getting cash and bragging rights. The competition will begin at 12:30 p.m., Saturday, April 6, in the Quillen arena on the fair- grounds. At the Delaware Horse Expo, Advanced Level Eventer and Certified Level II USEA Instructor Steuart Pittman, of Dodon Farm near Annapolis, Md., will present clinics that focus on working with retired Thoroughbreds. Cowboy clinician and trick rider David Davis is also a pas- tor on horseback who will open the second day of the expo at 9 a.m.with Cowboy Church.
