CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, April 10 - April 16, 1998. 15 Rehoboth Continued from page 1 end repairs on the south side of Rehoboth Avenue, bulkheading work on Olive and Maryland av- enues and the handicap ramp at the north end of the Boardwalk. The board of commissioners voted April 9 to accept this re- vised bid of $297,095. They also voted to accept a separate bid from Sun Marine (which was go- ing to subcontract under the initial Julian bid) to do the bulkhead work at a cost of $60,750. They then voted to allot the rest of the work to the Force Account (whomever the city can find to do the project), at an estimated cost of $27,800. Prior to the vote, Ferrese report- ed that the city's engineer, Steve Soule, recommended the award- ing of the revised bid to Julian, having discussed the status with FEMA and Delaware Emergency Management Agency (DEMA) officials. He also noted that all timber materials will be supplied by Longlife Treat,d Wood Inc., the lew bidder. During the special meeting, Commissioner Bitsy Cochran in- quired if this reworking of the bid could cause the city problems, as other contractors may have bid on the project had they known there would be changes in the specs. Commissioner Jack Hyde told her that they had informed other prospective bidders they could ac- cept anything below the bid price, even if it didn't meet the specifi- cations, and "when all is said and done with this new bid, the work will be done as the initial specifi- cations required." As the board prepared to vote, Hyde reminded them "that Re- hoboth without the Boardwalk isn't Rehoboth," and the vote passed 4-0, with Hyde, Cochran, Richard Sargent and Kenny Vin- cent unanimously approving the three recommendations from Soule. Ferrese publicly thanked Sen. Joe Biden's office, Rep. Mike Castle's office and DEMA for their help over the past couple of days in coming up with this solu- tion, as well as Department of Natural Resources and Environ- mental Control's John Hughes, who has offered to do whatever it takes to fix the street ends at the south end of the Boardwalk. Ferrese added that work is ex- pected to get underway early next week, with the Boardwalk re- opened a section at a time as it is completed. The project is expect- ed to be finished by Memorial Day weekend. FREE DELIVERY SET-UP AND REMOVAL TO A NYWHERE ON THIS MAP 'EXCEPT N.J.)
