,. .dkPlg GAZETYE,.Friday, April 10,,-April 16,1998...45 Trends in aging prc mote positives of growing older By Patti Quinn, R.N. The study of aging is called gerontology. Why study aging? Well, for starters it can help a per- son understand some of the cur- rent social issues. A soci- ety with increasingly more older people will experience changes in social institu- tions such as the family, the QUINN health-care system and recreation- al programs. Some families will need more help with care giving as parents and grandparents are thankfully living longer because of advances in medicine. The trend now is that many more older people are get- ting more of their health-related services right at home. Older people are becoming more active in fitness programs, travel and university courses. These trends lead to different social service needs, which requires a shift in economic resources. Public policy will be decided by changing demograph- ics. By the year 2050, the United States will have at least 67 million more older people, 2.5 times the number of older people alive in 1980. Along with understanding social issues, studying gerontol- ogy is also helping me to under- stand ageism. Ageism is defined as a process of systematic stereo- typing and discrimination against people because they are old. We can see ageism in all the birthday cards that poke fun of people who Broadhurst named as a director at Beebe Norene Broadhurst, former community education coordinator for Beebe Medical Center, has been promoted to director of occupational health and community health. This new position combines the responsibilities of two former posi- tions into one. In her new role, Broadhurst will be able to build Beebe Medical Center's presence on the front end of the continuum of care that involves community education, illness prevention, and early detection. The new initiative will allow Beebe to expand and coordinate its focus on customers who include the employers of Sussex County. BROADItURST Broadhurst can be reached at 645-3263. are 40 and up regarding declining physical and sexual abilities. Commercials are a prime source for ageism. Ads that show older people often portray them in stereotyped roles. They advertise products like laxatives, diapers or denture cream. The fact is not all old people use diapers or need denture cream and laxatives are used by all ages. Gerontology helps keep a bal- anced view of the aging popula- tion; it advocates a positive per- ception of aging. Older people today make up the richest generation of older people in history. Older people want psy- chological fulfillment and want to achieve life-satisfaction. This population has personal growth needs and the need to live life to the fullest. So the next time you come across anything that puts down the aging population, just remember it's putting you and your parents down. More importantly, if we believe the negative view of the aged, think how that might affect public policy for the future older popula- tion.
