46 - CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, April 10 - April 16, 1998 Easter Seal Society sets Sussex workshops for april 16 The Easter Seal Society, a provider of services to enhance the lives of people in all segments of the community, is offering the following workshops at its DATI/Assistive Technology Re- source Center at Delaware Techni- cal & Community College. Cognitive Disabilities - The objectives of this workshop are to increase participants' knowledge of the memory deficits, problem- solving skills and convergent thinking skills affected by a brain injury. Assistive technology to be described will range from low- tech memory aids to screen read- ing programs that maintain the attention of the individual with cognitive deficits. Workshop will be held on Thursday, April 16, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nonrefund- able course fees are $25 for all attendees. This workshop has been approved for Department of Public Instruction in-service cred- its and CEUs for occupational therapists and speech-language pathologists. Hearing and Visual Impair- ments - A Technology Overview - Participants of this workshop will become familiar with assistance technology for people with hear- ing and visual impairments. Amplification and alerting devices and aids for low vision (including magnification and tac- tile) will be demonstrated. Telecommunications for people with hearing and/or speech impairments will be covered. Workshop will be held Thursday, April 23, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nonrefundable course fees are $25 for all attendees. This work- shop has been approved for Department of Public Instruction Reality therapy focus of April 2,00i seminar the program will address control and reality therapy, its applica- tions, theory and effectiveness within the counseling situation. Combining lecture, role-playing and group discussion, the seminar is targeted to social service agen- cies, counselors, psychologists and church leaders. The presenter is Sally J. King, Human resources professionals have the opportunity to update and improve their skills and knowl- edge by participating in the Reali- ty Therapy seminar offered by Delaware Technical & Communi- ty College, Owens Campus. Scheduled for Friday, April 24, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and April 25, from 8:30 a.m. to noon, Del Tech sets April 17 for Asthma Awareness Day Prevention of asthma is the best course, Westcott said, and this is easier with a better knowledge of what asthma is and what triggers attacks. For those who have the disease, the goal should be to manage it on a day-to-day basis and to avoid emergency room vis- its, hospitalization and serious health consequences. Speakers will address topics such as medication, lifestyle alter- ations, control techniques and treatment options. Delaware Tech's respiratory care technology students will perform free pul- monary function testing; special activities are planned for children 5 and over. Participants at the third annual Asthma Awareness Day on Friday, April 17, can enhance their lives by learning more about the disease and its treatment. This free event, sponsored by the Delaware Technical & Com- munity College and the American Lung Association of Delaware, will be held in Room 529 of the William A. Carter Partnership Center on the Owens Campus from 12:30 to 4 p.m. It is an edu- cational opportunity for the entire family, not just the person with asthma, emphasized Lori West- cott, Health Institute Program Developer at Delaware Tech.
