1- 44 - CAPE GAZETTE - Friday, April 11 - Monday, April 14, 2008 The Comfort Zone's yogic twist for athletes Learn how to really go with the flow By_Henry J. Evans Jr. Cape Gazette staff Ed and Wendy Harrold have a talent and passion for getting to the heart of things. 'q'he nose is for breathing, the mouth is for eat- ing," Ed tells an athletics coach during a telephone call at The Comfort Zone, a yoga, fitness and health studio the couple opened in Nassau in 2006. In June, The Comfort Zone is offering two programs aimed at teaching youth and adult athletes and exercise enthusiasts how to tap into the power of yogic train- ing techniques to improve strength, flexibility and endurance - all of which are key elements to enhance performance. Ed is director of sports gaining and yoga for The Institute For Extraordinary Living at Kripalu Center based in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts. His participation as an athlete in a variety of sports led him to yoga. Through the years he's fused yogic techniques and sports to create hybrid flexibility and work- out training methods. Exercises commonly used at boot camps - push-ups, sprints, jump rope, agility training and lunges - will also be part of the program. But the program breaks from traditional training by adding yogic breathing and medi- tation techniques. Instruction in five breathing techniques will teach athletes how - and when - to get oxygen deep into the lower third of the lungs where they will make the most of Submitted photo The Comfort Zone yoga and fitness studio will offer adult boot camps and youth flexibility camps beginning in June. ".When you move through obstacle courses and the things that are set up at the boot camp, you're going to do it using yogic breathing techniques," Wendy said. Workout warm-ups and cool- downs will also integrate yoga and introduce relaxation and med- itation techniques. "Our philosophy is that you get more from honey than you do from vinegar. We're loving and nurturing to folks when we bring them into these programs. There isn't hollering, shaminffor putting anybody down. However you come in is where you're going to be afftrmed. "What youdo well, we're going to show you how to do better. What you can't do well isn't important right now," E4 said. Boot camp workouts are intend- ed to be instructional and fun. "You're not going to hear 'Drop and give me 50!' We want it to feel more fun than that," Wendy said. Continued on page 45 ( \\; at Jhit Oa Cr Welcome to Sawgrass at White Oak Creek.
