68 - CAPE GAZETTE - Friday, April 11 - Monday, April 14, 2008 Police motorcycle ride to raise funds "or Camp Barnes The Delaware State Police will be hosting the first Colonel's Camp Barnes Chili Run Sunday, April 13. This event is a police- escorted motorcycle ride that will commence at two locations in Delaware and, after a scenic tour of the state, will conclude at Camp Barnes Camp Barnes is a nonprofit summer camp that benefits kids ages 10-13 and has been in oper- ation for the last 60 years. The camp is run from July to August and is free of charge to all partici- pants. Throughout its operation, Camp Barnes,qocated on Miller's Creek, a tributary of Little Assawoman Bay, has served the needs of thou- sands of children throughout Delaware. Camp Barnes was designed to provide children an opportunity to experience life at a summer youth camp. It has remained basically unchanged, providing Delaware children with these outdoor experiences for Zwaanendael Club to host environmentalist Russell Peterson The Zwaanendael Women's Club of Lewes invites the public to attend its meeting at 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 15, on the second floor of the Lewes Public Library, Kings Highway and Adams Avenue. The speaker will be former Gov. Russell Peterson, an interna- tionally known environmentalist as well as a scientist, activist and author. During his term as governor, Peterson was the major force in the passage of the 1971 Coastal Zone Act, which banned heavy industry within, two miles of Delaware's ll5-mile coastline. As president of the National Audubon Society, he moved that organization into a position of international prominence with regard to population growth and energy issues. Combining sci- ence, education and citizen action, he seeks to advance his philoso- phy of helping humanity to live in harmony with the natural environ- ment. He is a founding chairman of the board of the Global Tomorrow Coalition and a former dLrector of the World Wildlife Fund. At the meeting, Peterson will discuss his life and his knowledge of energy solutions. Refreshments will be served. For more information, call Pat Rockett at 645-6438. more than 50 years. This ride "is to help provide monetary funds in order to restore the lodging and facilities needed to sustain a positive environment for all the campers. This endeavor is also aimed at reminding the public of the wonderful activities Camp Barnes has to offer area youth. Motorcycle enthusiasts will be able to register the day of the event at one of two locations, the Smyrna rest area on Route 13 north of Smyrna, and Harley- Davidson of Seaford on Route 13 north of Seaford. The time to reg- ister will be from 9 to 10 a.m. at each of the locations and the cost is $25.00 per rider. The first 200 riders will receive a free T-Shirt. Chili and refreshments will be provided at the conclusion of the ride. This event is open to the public and all citizens are invited to attend.
