"I've been drawing ever since I was little," said Milton Elementary School fifth-grader Mia Azato as her mother nodded nearby. "I drew pictures under- neath the coffee table, and I've been coloring on everything ever since." Mia was one of 21 James Kenneth Derrickson Memorial Scholarship recipients selected by their teachers from the elemen- tary, middle and high school stu- dents throughout Sussex County whose artwork is on display at the Young at Art exhibit. The scholar- ship includes one year's free tuition for Rehoboth Art League classes. Fellow Derrickson scholarship recipients and the schools they represent are as follows: Dan Abel of Milford High, Tobias Austin of Frankford Elementary School, Ronnie Barrios of Seaford Central Elementary School, Emily Buck of Phillis Wheatley Middle School, Juan Cantu of Richard Shields Elementary School, Karen Chorman of Cape Henlope n High School, Rebecca Dziak of Beacon Middle School, Alexa Gorman of Eagles Nest Christian Academy, Chase Milligan of the Sussex Academy of Arts and Sciences, Allie Mueller of Mariner Middle School, Tuyet Nhung Nguyen of Seaford High School, Carly Piel of Selbyville Middle School, Zachary Richard of Southern Delaware School of the Arts, Antoine Taylor of Woodbridge High School, Seth Thomas of Blades Elementary School, Dillon Thune of Indian River High School, Marina Travalini of Lord Baltimore Elementary School, Para Washam of Rehoboth Elementary School, Anfernee Wescott of West Seaford Elementary School and Jeramie Wimbrow of The Centre of Visual and Performing Arts at Sussex Central. Exhibit judge Elizabeth Gatti, director of admissions for the Delaware College of Art and Design, selected students to receive monetary awards. David Luni, a junior at Sussex Central High School, received the Village Improvement Association Award for his animation called "Cooking With Frank." He said he wants to become a professional animator. Also receiving monetary awards were first-place winner Katie Allman of Indian River High, who won the Tom Wilson award of $200; third-place winner Jason Cooper of Milford High, who won a $75 gift certificate from Rehoboth Art & Framing; and fourth-place recipie/at John Iacona, who won a $50 gift certifi- cate from Rehoboth Art & Framing. Sponsored by PNC Bank, the Young at Art exhibit will be on display at the Rehoboth Art League through Sunday, April 27. Work by high school students is on display in the Homestead Gallery. Work by elementary and middle school students is on dis- play in the Corkran and Tubbs galleries, and all Derrickson win- ners are in the Ventures Gallery.
