It was once envisioned to be a historically accurate account of football's earliest innovators, a blood-and-mud saga of gridiron gladiators, and a comedic take on colorful pigskin pioneers. It arrives in theaters as a screw- ball comedy throwback - cobbled Prom Night: A dark secret amongst a group of children comes back to haunt them in the form of a vengeful killer on their prom night. Rated PG-13. Street Kings: Tom Ludlow, a veteran LAPD vice detective, sets out on a quest to discover the killers of his former partner. Rated R. Run, Fat Boy, Run: A charm- ing but oblivious overweight guy leaves his fiancee on their wed- ding day only to discover years later that he really loves her. Rated PG- 13. The Ruins: Four American friends on vacation in Cancun, Mexico, meet a German tourist together with romantic subplots, early growing pains of the game, and fictional glimpses into the lives of the sport's bruising broth- erhood. The result is a curious mix that is overstuffed with half-planned protractions of what might have been if director/star George Clooney had remained focused not on merely gaining yardage with small hand-offs of laughter, but on just where the goal line of his film was. that persuades them to join his hunt for his younger brother, who was last seen with his girlfriend near some mysterious ruins, Rated R. Nim's Island: Anything can happen on Nim's Island, a magi- col place ruled by a young girl's imagination. It is an existence that mirrors that of her favorite liter- ary character, Alex Rover - the world's greatest adventurer. But Alexandra, the author of the Rover books, leads a reclusive life in the big city. Rated PG. Leatherheads: In 1925, Dodge Connolly is a charming, brash football hero who is deter- mined to guide his team from bar brawls to packed stadiums. Rated PG-13. Not screwy enough for screw- bail, not hard-hitting enough for a sports picture and far-too-slight as a commentary on the souring of the game with all its "rules" and "regulations," "Leatherheads merely scrambles in scene after scene, wearily winding down the clock. Clooney plays Dodge Connelly, the aging coach and player of the amatehr Duluth Bulldogs, one of the last holdouts in a rapidly Continued on page 109 The Other Boleyn Girl: Two sisters, Anne and Mary Boleyn, are driven by their ambitious father and uncle to advance the family's power and status by courting the affections of the King of England.
